Behind every SOOS HEELS pair is a working atelier — not a marketing idea of one. This is where our shoes are designed, cut, lasted and finished by hand, and it is why we describe them as handcrafted without a second thought. Here is how that craft works, from hide to heel.
The Craft Behind the Collection
SOOS began with Sophia and Oscar — she with an eye for silhouette, he with hands that understood leather. They opened their first workshop in Tuscany with a single cutting table, two sewing machines and no clients, and grew it on the strength of the work itself: small batches, handmade, and a refusal to compromise. The atelier grew from 40 to 400 square metres, yet every pair still passes through their hands before it leaves the workshop. Read our full story.
Materials
Leather is the foundation of everything we make, so we begin with the material itself. SOOS works principally in full-grain Italian leather, with hides hand-selected from Italian tanneries in the Tuscan tradition.
Full-grain is the highest grade of leather: the natural surface of the hide is kept intact rather than buffed or split away. The result is a stronger, more breathable material that develops character with wear — a soft patina over time — instead of simply wearing out. Lower grades, by contrast, are sanded or split and often finished to imitate a surface the leather no longer possesses. When a material does not meet our standard, it does not enter the workshop.
Our palette spans the finishes that suit a heeled wardrobe: calf leather for its fine, even grain; suede for a soft, brushed nap; patent for deep, mirror gloss; and metallic leathers for evening. Inside, genuine leather linings help the foot breathe and allow the shoe to soften gradually with wear. Whatever the finish, the grade never changes: the same full-grain standard runs through the collection, because a beautiful silhouette cannot rescue an inferior hide.
Construction & Finish
Handmade construction is a sequence of small decisions rather than a single gesture, and each one affects how the finished shoe looks, feels and lasts:
- Hand preparation. Uppers are cut and prepared by hand, with edges skived and shaped so that seams sit cleanly and layers meet invisibly.
- Lasting by hand. The upper is pulled, tensioned and set over the last by hand — the step that gives a shoe its true shape and the reason our silhouettes feel as considered as they look.
- Balanced heels. Every heel is set and weighted so the shoe stands evenly and feels planted beneath the wearer, whether the style is a delicate kitten heel or a sculptural block.
- Finish and inspection. Edges are burnished, toe caps polished and details hand-finished; each pair is then inspected before it is wrapped.
Quality & Comfort
Comfort in a heeled shoe is engineered, not incidental. Cushioned insoles soften every step, while the construction and the last work together so the foot is supported where it needs to be and the weight of the heel is balanced across the shoe. Genuine leather uppers soften and flex as they are worn, and because the lining is leather rather than synthetic, the shoe breathes around the foot — qualities that matter most on the days you are on your feet from morning to evening. Because the design and the making happen under one roof, small refinements — the pitch of a heel, the depth of a toe box, the flex of an upper — can be resolved in person, on the last, rather than lost in email chains between a distant designer and factory.
Quality also means honesty about fit. We develop our lasts through years of fitting real feet, and we are glad to advise on sizing and silhouette before you order, so the pair that arrives is the pair you expected.
An Investment, Not a Disposable
Much of today’s footwear is designed for a photograph rather than for years of wear — a season, a trend, and then the bin. SOOS was founded in reaction to that idea. We make the opposite kind of shoe: timeless silhouettes in full-grain leather that develops a patina, construction that respects the material, and finishes chosen to be maintained rather than replaced. This is the difference between buying ten pairs that wear out and investing in pairs that last — an investment, not a disposable, in the truest sense of the phrase.
